Herbert Carroll Horton was born at home on January 16, 1917 to Epp Carroll Horton and Emma Anderson Horton in Cooper, Texas. He was the youngest of three. His sister Lorene and Royce, his brother proceed him in death.

He met Margaret Thompson Platt on a blind date in 1938 and married her a month later. They had three daughters, Carolyn, Saundra and Barbara. He had 6 grandchildren, Linda, Logan, Jeff, Deb, Chris, Michelle, 8 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

His name was Herbert, but we all knew him as Papa. He was a kind generous man who gave everything he had to his family. He dearly loved his wife, and was rarely apart from her.

He worked hard for his family, starting as a field rep for RCA and eventually helping to role out the brand-new color television. After retirement, he became a business owner, and the family helped running the laundromats, which he named after his beloved wife.

We remember him for ice cream cones late at night when he came home from work and asking for a dime and getting a quarter. For taking us all camping and s’mores by the campfire. For birthday dinners, and popcorn, and making everyone feel like they’re part of the family.

We remember him for working to make the world a better place through the Optimist’s Club and for his sense of humor.

He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in all of us who remember, in all of us that he touched, in all of us who love him.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7pm at Harry W. Moore Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Road. His funeral will be held at Warren Baptist Church on Wednesday at 11am with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. He will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.

His family requests that any donations in Herb's memory be directed to Warren Baptist Church, 9501 E 21st Street, Indianapolis, IN.
